What is it with this time of year?

I suddenly get nostalgic and start craving my childhood treats! It must have something to do with the cold weather and the early nights. All I want to do is curl up on a sofa, preferably in front of a fire, and eat!
Anyway, this is my latest craving that I want to share with you: Vanille Kipferl (I dare you to pronounce it), my favourite ever German Advent Cookie. It is super easy and really fun to make with kids…..

vanille Kipferl

Here goes:

210 grams of Flour
180 grams of Butter
50 grams of Icing Sugar
70 grams of powdered Almonds
2 Egg Yolks

For the frosting:

60 grams of Icing Sugar
3 packets of Vanilla Sugar (now, it is hard to get this sugar in the UK but everywhere else in Europe you find it in the baking section)

Mix the flour with the butter, the sugar, the almonds and the egg yolks. Knead it into a dough ball and put it in the fridge to cool for 1/2 hour.  After it has cooled down, make little sausages out of the dough and shape them into crescents. (This is the fun part for the kids).
Bake the crescents in the oven at around 180 degrees until they are just golden. While they are baking mix the icing sugar with the Vanilla Sugar to make the frosting. When the cookies are baked and still hot, throw them into the frosting so that they are completely covered and let them cool.

I promise they are the best.
